Wardale provides strategic direction for valued regional port
Updated: 11 minutes ago
The Whanganui Port project, Te Pūwaha, is a significant regional infrastructure initiative centred at the mouth of the Whanganui River.

Designed as a modern marine precinct, the project combines wharf upgrades, marine servicing infrastructure, dredging and flood protection works to secure the long-term future of the port and its role in New Zealand’s coastal freight and marine industry. It is a partnership-led development, grounded in the values of Te Awa Tupua and shaped to deliver economic, environmental and community outcomes for Whanganui and the wider region.
Wardale has been closely involved in the evolution of the project, contributing strategic direction, marine infrastructure expertise and delivery support as the port transitions from a legacy asset into a future-focused marine hub.
This has included helping define the operational requirements of the port, aligning infrastructure investment with industry needs, and supporting a staged approach to redevelopment that enables ongoing use while upgrades are delivered. The work reflects Wardale’s strength in balancing commercial viability, practical marine operations and long-term regional outcomes.
The project also marked an important milestone this year with the appointment of marina industry colleague Dave Withington of Upmojo Limited whose experience and leadership will support the next phase of delivery.
His appointment reflects the calibre of expertise being brought to Te Pūwaha, and Wardale congratulates Dave on taking on this role within a project of such significance. As the development progresses, the combination of strong governance, technical capability and shared vision positions Whanganui Port as a resilient and future-ready marine precinct.
