In June 2023, Phil was appointed to the board of Nelson Marina, marking his second directorship within the marina sector and reflecting his growing contribution to governance across New Zealand’s marine infrastructure network. The appointment followed his earlier role as an independent director of Bay of Islands Marina, a subsidiary of Far North Holdings, where he has served since June 2022. Together, these roles highlight Phil’s depth of experience and the value of his strategic insight at board level.

Phil’s governance approach is grounded in a strong understanding of marina operations, commercial performance and long-term asset management.

At Bay of Islands Marina, he has contributed to the oversight of a council-controlled organisation operating within a complex stakeholder environment, balancing community expectations with commercial outcomes. This experience has translated well into the Nelson context, where similar considerations around infrastructure investment, customer demand and regional economic contribution are central to decision making.

His appointment to Nelson Marina comes at a time when marinas are increasingly recognised as critical infrastructure, supporting not only recreational boating but also tourism, marine services and local employment. Phil’s ability to bring a practical, industry-informed perspective to governance supports boards in making informed, future-focused decisions.

Phil's appointments reflect both his individual capability and the broader role Wardale plays in supporting strong governance and leadership across New Zealand’s marina industry.
